Detrimental Effect of Decapping or Emasculation on the Senescence of Cut cymbidium Flowers and Its Reversal by AVG

Abstract
The present experiments were carried out to investigate the detrimental effect of decapping or emasculation on the postharvest quality of cut Cymbidium flowers and its reversal by AVG. Fresh weight of decapped or emasculated flowers was rapidly decreased 4 days after the treatment, which corresponded to the time of second rise in ethylene production after the initial rise. This decrease in decapped or emasculated flowers pretreated with AVG was not found. Anthocyanin content of decapped or emasculated flowers 10 days after the treatment was significantly greater than those pretreated with AVG. These results indicate that AVG pretreatment may retard the premature senescence of decapped or emasculated Cymbidium flower by blocking anthocyanin formation and rapid decrease in fresh weight caused by the second rise in ethylene production, while no inhibition of the initial ethylene production takes place.
